Embracing the Haunted: A Thrilling Journey to Nilkuthi Mangalgunj

Caught in a work-induced haze, I struggled to keep my eyes open while staring blankly at my laptop. Suddenly, a buzzing phone broke the monotony—it was Neel. “Hey, what’s up? Listen, apply for leave on Friday and pack your bags, be ready!” My initial response was hesitation—I had just returned from a trip and wasn’t keen on asking for more time off. But then Neel dropped the bombshell: “It’s a haunted camp, dude!” Without a moment’s delay, I applied for leave, excitement bubbling inside me like a child.

Friday arrived, and I was determined to experience the haunted camp, no matter what. I pressed Neel for the name of the place— “Mangalgunj, now hush!” With plans set, we embarked on our journey. We opted for a local train from Sealdah railway station to Bongaon, followed by a series of toto rides to reach Mangalgunj Backpackers’ villa. Alternatively, there was a route via Chakdah railway station and Nataberia by bus.

Arriving at Mangalgunj backpackers’ camp around 12:30 pm, we underwent sanitization procedures before being greeted with refreshing nimbu pani. Run by IZIFISO, the camp was adorned with spooky decor and offered accommodation in adventure tents and bamboo cottages. Meals were included, featuring Bengali home-cooked delights with bamboo chicken as an optional extra.

Mangalgunj, a village with a dark past of British oppression and the Swadeshi movement, exuded an eerie atmosphere. We explored the ruins of Neel Kuthi, once witness to gruesome atrocities. Lunch at the camp was followed by a serene boat ride on the Ichamoti river, offering picturesque views and a glimpse of Bibhutibhusan wildlife Sanctuary.

As night fell, we embarked on the ghost walk, guided by Raju Da. The darkness enveloped us as we delved into local tales and legends. Goosebumps accompanied us as we explored the haunted haveli, its decrepit walls whispering tales of bygone horrors.

Returning to camp, discussions lingered late into the night, with some of us finding sleep elusive. The following morning brought solace in the form of fresh air and birdsong. Reflecting on our unique experiences, I left Mangalgunj with cherished memories and a recommendation for fellow travelers.

If you’re seeking an offbeat adventure, Mangalgunj is a must-visit. Just remember to take necessary precautions and embrace the thrills that await. Stay happy, stay healthy!
